Career Planning

Let's be honest -- thinking about your options after high school can be intimidating and overwhelming.  Your school counselor is here to help as you explore these opportunities and make the decisions that can pave your way to success in your career!  Let's start with a few tips...

➢   Throughout high school, make sure that you are spending the majority of your time and efforts on your education!  This is your full-time job!  If you are struggling in a class, ask the teacher for help and see your counselor for information about organizing your studying - and sign up for tutoring.  For more information, check out the "Study Skills Assistance" tab on the left.

➢   Really start to think about the sort of work you would like to do for a living.  Most people work from their mid-20s until their mid-60s, so that is 40 years of working…isn't it worth the time to make sure you choose that career wisely?  Here are some steps we recommend:SchoolCenter Picture

  • Talk with adults in your life about their careers and the paths that they took getting there.

  • See your counselor to talk about the careers you're considering and to learn about related courses at Central, opportunities that are available, and colleges that you should consider.

  • Visit the Career Center to find out about job shadowing.  It's like a special field trip set up just for you to spend time with someone in a career that you're considering and it can be set up for any student who is ready to present themselves professionally in the workplace. Click here to visit the CYHS Career Center website.

➢   Check out the opportunities available to you here in high school.  In addition to all of the classes we offer at CYHS, students are able to take courses at York County School of Technology, the HACC Academy, York College of Pennsylvania, Penn State York, Harrisburg Area Community College, and Consolidated School of Business. Opportunities are also available for internships and mentorships.  For more details, check out the Course Selection Guide and see your school counselor!
