This course offers students a unique opportunity to study a wide range of illustration and graphic design methodology. Students will create a series of works by combining materials and processes using manual and digital production. Students will have access to cameras, scanners and computers in the studio, and will learn how the integration of mixed media applies to a career-minded approach in visual studies. Digital portfolio development will augment this curriculum, providing students with insight and opportunities available on a global platform. Commercial, conceptual, editorial, medical and literary illustration make up a few available outlets in the field today.

This is an advanced fine art course geared toward mastering the creative and artistic growth of students planning a career in the visual arts. We will refine technical skills, synthesize historical and cultural influences, and undergo exceptional problems to solve. Students will refine studio habits and take on an entirely rigorous work load. Our expectations are to heighten visual awareness as informed artists and to finalize a well-rounded portfolio-aimed at college level programs. Emphasis is placed on rehearsing traditional and unconventional forms of drawing as well as mixed media-from painting to printmaking. Sketchbooks are integral tools in the process and will be uploaded to digital format throughout the course of the semester. Serving as visual dialog, mapping one encounter and idea to the next, the sketchbook threads conceptual problem solving to technical demonstration and skill mastery-a narrative of our journey.

AP® Studio Art consists of two, nine-week marking periods (one semester). The course is designed to meet every day for eighty minutes. An investigation of three major components of portfolio development will be emphasized; quality, concentration, and breadth [C1]. These phases of exploration will be created in and outside of the classroom studio before, during, and after the formally scheduled semester. This portfolio development is an ongoing process in which students are expected to use informed and critical decision making to develop their work [C5]. The quality, or compositional component enables students to foster a mastery of concepts, as they relate to the technical execution of a portfolio. In other words, students explore and develop their personal interests and ideas, and envelop an artistic voice concerning their work [C2]. Known as (refer to) Section I. The concentration portion of this course lies in the investigation of multi-media, in a two- dimensional platform, in several drawing, painting, and printmaking processes, utilizing various techniques [C3]. Known as (refer to) Section II. The breadth section describes the depth in which students will explore a range of abilities and versatility with technique, problem solving, and ideation [C4]. It is also the collaboration time shared amongst artists that allows individuals to showcase strengths, possibilities, and avenues of personal focus. Known as (refer to) Section III. In all, the course places a major emphasis on art making as an ongoing process that involves critical decision making. Students are expected to use informed judgment and analysis to develop their work and that of their peers [C5].
