MIXED MEDIA / PRINT

DESCRIPTION
Students explore a variety of fascinating printmaking techniques (relief and intaglio). These techniques will be effectively combined/synthesized with a multitude of other drawing and painting processes that the students enter the class knowing. Artists refer to this art-making approach as ‘mixed-media’ – an exciting opportunity to merge your previous knowledge and skills with new printmaking techniques. Students will also have the opportunity to create their own sketchbook through paper making and book-binding processes.

UNITS OF STUDY

  • Introduction to Printmaking
  • Book-Binding Techniques
  • Drawing Exercises
  • Intaglio Techniques
  • Relief-printing Techniques

CURRENT ASSIGNMENT(s)

02/05

GIG POSTER

Objective: Each student has been prompted with the challenge of creating a "mock" poster for a band. The poster must contain the name of the band (or artist), location / venue for the event, date of the event, and must use both typographical and graphic elements in a manner that connects to the information being presented.

Research of existing "gig posters" is highly recommended. In addition, it is important to investigate the band or artist chosen / featured. An understanding here will lead to deeper visual connectedness and a more sophisticated overall piece when finished. Furthermore, ties made to the venue and/or the date in which the event is held may be incorporated into the 'fabric' of the project.

Scale (final dimensions) are up for interpretation. However, I highly recommend that your "final piece" be done in a larger format -- close to the dimensions of 20" (W) x 30" (H).

Media: Students may choose the material and process(es) for this poster. A variety of suggestions and viable options will be shown throughout the unit, now and then -- as they pertain to the needs and development of the class. Both digital and hands-on approaches will be discusses and encouraged -- yet the more successful solutions will be those which utilize the method most appropriate for the inherent message being communicated.

ALTERED BOOK

Objective: Locate an existing "book" and transform it into a new work of art.

This transformation will be performed through employing a variety of techniques and processes available to you. Such examples are:

• subtraction (removal of material from book); tunneling-through

• addition (connection or attachment of material/s to book)

• gesso application

• locking (glueing) blocks of pages to one another

• etc.

03/31 REDUCTION PRINT METHOD - "practice"
• We are exploring the relief printing method of linocut.
• Hardcopies of the following document (Reduction Print) were provided and discussed.
• In order to understand the process more clearly, students were tasked with creating a multiple-generation edition of 10 prints.
• For submission, each student must properly label (title, edition #/#, signature) the entire edition and submit 3 of the prints in matted form. Students should recall the demonstrations given in class -- relating to the labeling and matting.
