From the School Counseling Office
Teen Group Counseling Coming To CYHS
Family-Child Resources will begin offering counseling groups one time per week during our FLEX period. These teen groups will focus on building skills related to making good choices, regulating emotions, managing stress and dealing with change. These groups will be especially helpful to students who are facing academic demands, balancing busy schedules, handling anxiety or depression, and/or are dealing with low self-esteem, family changes, separation/divorce, loss of a loved one, illness within the family, or unhealthy relationships. Interested students should return the attached registration form to the School Counseling Office by January 17, 2020.

Opportunity for 10th Grade Students To Take the PreACT
On Friday, February 14, 2020, 10th grade students will have the opportunity to take the PreACT, a testing tool used to determine a student’s college and career readiness. Taking the PreACT is great practice for future ACT and/or SAT exams. Interested students should complete the attached registration form below and return to the High School Counseling Office with payment by January 31, 2020. A limited number of tests have been ordered so please register early. Students who meet financial eligibility requirements will be able to register at no cost. Please contact your school counselor to arrange.

Getting Ready for College Program
Mark you calendars NOW! The high school will be hosting the “Getting Ready for College” Program on February 6 in the Central York High School cafeteria from 7 to 8:30 pm. As in the past, we will have college representatives from four or five colleges speaking to parents about the college admissions process along with “How to Decide Which College is Right for You”. After the presenters have shared this information with you, we will open it up for questions from the parents. This is a very informative evening you will not want to miss! Come early to pick up materials in the atrium from each of the college representatives, too!

Schedule Changes
As the semester changes, please keep in mind that schedule changes can be made through the third day of the new semester only! After the third day of the new classes, no new requests for schedule changes can be honored unless the learner is academically misplaced or has a documented medical reason for the change.

Scholarships & financial aid for post-secondary education

A comprehensive financial aid guide is available in the School Counseling Office for all interested learners and their parents. Learners are also encouraged to stop by the School Counseling Office on a weekly basis to check the Scholarship List for the latest information and to obtain applications. This Scholarship List and much more information can also be viewed atwww.tinyurl.com/financialaidcyhs. Seniors who are planning to attend any post-secondary school (including technical schools) are reminded to complete all of the required financial aid forms. If in doubt, contact the School Counseling Office to receive information regarding the forms that you will be required to file. Additionally, there are FREE scholarship search services. The School Counseling Office recommends Fastweb.com and Scholarships.com.

Scholarship Application Procedure
When students apply for private scholarships, they will find that there are a variety of expectations and methods for applying. Seniors are encouraged to ask their school counselor for guidance as much as needed during this process. In general, these guidelines should help:

If the scholarship is a PAPER application to be mailed, the student should complete their part and bring it to the CYHS Counseling Office with a stamped/addressed envelope. There is an orange request sheet that the student will need to complete and attach to the scholarship/envelope. We will add the official transcript and any requested letters of recommendation to their application and mail the entire packet. We typically are able to do this within 2-3 business days, but ask students to allow us 10 school days to process applications.

If the scholarship is ONLINE and asks the student to upload their transcript, the student can log on to their Parchment account, download their transcript and upload it to the application. If the student discovers that their self-view of their transcript on Parchment isn't fully up-to-date, they can press "UPDATE" and then wait for our Counseling Office Secretary to upload the most updated version (within 2-3 business days, typically).

If the scholarship is ONLINE and asks the student to enter the email address of their school counselor, it is very likely that the counselor will be able to submit the transcript electronically directly on the portal of the scholarship organization and the student will likely not need to do anything additional. These sorts of scholarships may also ask the student to enter the email addresses of their recommenders, which will prompts those adults to submit letters of recommendation electronically also.

If the scholarship requests that the student's official transcript (and/or letters of recommendation) be emailed to them, the student should log on to their Parchment account and ORDER these documents to go directly to the provided email address for that scholarship.  As always, students are encouraged to contact their school counselor with any questions.

Summer Opportunities
Looking for ways to learn new things, serve the community, and build your resume? Check out the “Summer Opportunities” part of our website! Start researching these programs soon, as many deadlines are upcoming! (http://hs.cysd.k12.pa.us/teacher__staff_websites/school_counseling/summer_opportunities_for_students)

National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Eligibility
Student-athletes planning to play sports in college should learn about the NCAA eligibility requirements at http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/eligibility_center/Student_Resources/CBSA.pdf. Student-athletes should also register with the NCAA Clearinghouse by the beginning of their senior year. Registration should be done online at eligibilitycenter.org. The NCAA determines final eligibility.
