YOU GOT IT!  WEEK OF OCTOBER 23RD

Dear CYHS Panthers -

CLC for FLEX - Friday
All grade levels will be going back to CLC for FLEX on Friday, October 27.

In addition to grade review, all 10th and 12th graders will be asked to complete the PAYS Survey using the link below.

The Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS) is a biennial survey of youth in the 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th grades.  PAYS asks questions about students’ attitudes, knowledge and behaviors concerning alcohol, tobacco, other drugs (ATOD), violence, depression, and other problem behaviors.  The survey also collects information about risk factors which are the conditions that increase the likelihood that a child will develop problem behaviors later in life, and it also collects information about protective factors – people or conditions in a community that can buffer a youth from risk.

It's Socktober: Donate Socks!
The Acts of Kindness Club is collecting NEW socks for the annual Socktober sock drive! The donated socks will stay in the Central community for Central children during the winter months.  And, for every pair of socks you donate, you have the chance of winning donuts for your CLC. Simply put your CLC teacher's name inside the socks, and we'll randomly select two winning CLCs from each pair of socks dropped in the box. Yes, that's right: a 6-pack of socks gets you six chances to win!  Drop the socks in the Rock box outside room 165 ( the upstairs atrium) by October 31. Any size socks are needed and appreciated!

Bully Prevention Week
Join Central's SADD Club and Avedium Peer Leaders at lunch this week to celebrate Bullying Prevention Week.  Take an orange bracelet after you sign a pledge card to take a stand against bullying. Your pledge will be added to a chain that symbolizes our strong, united effort to make our school and community a better place.  Check the atrium next week to see how strong the chain will be!

Part of the Story Program
Part of the Story is a new program that York County Libraries have created for teens.  This program was started to connect teens with authors, but has grown to become so much more.  For our first year, our Youth Services personnel have picked an issue that is affecting teens throughout the county, the heroin epidemic, combined that issue with a fictional book, Smack by Melvin Burgess, and have pulled together people from our community to tell their "part of the story" about this issue.

Besides discussing this book, teens will have the opportunity to meet Melvin Burgess via Google Hangouts to ask him questions about his writing.  Participants will also meet with local law enforcement members, Not One More representatives, representatives from the Children's Home of York, and then, at the culminating meeting/event, the Teen Town Hall, they will have the opportunity to meet with members of the York Opioid Collaborative.  We are hoping this unique program will help teens see how an issue affects different parts of our community, and then, gain a better understanding of an issue.  Teens who participate in this year's program will have the opportunity to help select the next issue to tackle next year.

The program is free, and participants will receive a free copy of the book.  Food will be served.  Teens will be given the opportunity to respond in their own unique way to this issue that is facing their community. Please see the attached flyer for more information.
