1)  Q What is the SRI?
A
The SRI or Scholastic Reading Inventory is a “computer-adaptive” reading comprehension test.
2)  Q What is a “computer-adaptive” test?
A
The computer software automatically monitors the response to every question and therefore “adapts” to the student’s ability.

–If the student misses a question, the next question is slightly easier.

–If the student answers correctly, the next question will be slightly harder.
3)  Q What are some features of the SRI?
A
The SRI is a “computer-adaptive” reading comprehension test that…

–assesses student reading levels (Lexile),

–tracks students’ growth over time,

–matches readers to text, and

–helps guide instruction (READ 180).

•The SRI uses authentic text passages in every question.

•All 3,000 questions in the SRI item bank are from children’s literature, both fiction and nonfiction, as well as excerpts from young adult and classic literature, newspapers, magazines, and periodicals.
6)  Q What is a Lexile?
A
A lexile is a unit of measurement used when determining the difficulty of text and the reading level of readers.
7)  Q What is a Lexile range?
A
•It is the suggested range of Lexiles at which a reader should be reading.

•It is 50 above the Lexile, and 100 below the Lexile.

•Example

–Lexile is 820L

–Lexile range is 720L-870L
